Gwadar in bullet points.
- Despite having vast amounts of gas, oil reserves and other resources, the former Soviet states that now constitute Central Asia are largely underdeveloped due to their landlocked locations. The emergence of Gwadar promises to open up the Arabian sea to every landlocked nation in Central Asia, as well as giving China a much shorter route to the Arabian sea. In other words the very heart of the Asian continent will open up to the world, hence ‘a gateway to Asia’ is a fitting description of the city’s potential.
Geostrategic importance og Gwadar
- The reliance of Central Asian Republics (CARs) like Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan on Pakistani infrastructure, coupled with religious, cultural and historical ties to Pakistan, will effectively bring them under a Pakistani sphere of influence. Considering these possibilities, Islamabad has been very keen on kick starting trade through the port but predictably there has been fierce opposition from India and plenty of raised eyerows from western powers.
